The lighter ruby-hued 2018 Bricco Rosso Centennial Mountain Vineyard offers up a pretty, Nebbiolo-like bouquet of mulled cherries, dried herbs, licorice, and flowers. Beautifully complex and elegant, it's medium-bodied on the palate and has light, silky yet present tannins, a wonderful core of sweet fruit, and a great finish. It's like a Barbaresco mixed with a Red Burgundy. The blend is 50% Nebbiolo, 15% each of Nerello Mascalese, Carignan, and Primitivo, and the final 5% Barbera. I don't think there's anyone in California doing Italian varieties better than Kevin Harvey and his team at Rhys (who are behind the Aeris wines).

Racked to tank in late September. Mid purple colour, a certain energy, then a straw aspect to the nose, otherwise quite typical gamay. Strawberry fruit, slighter than usual but has retained purity with good acidity. Honourable result. Drink from 2024-2026.

"This wine plays the role of the classic Barolo release, or the "annata" (vintage) wine if you prefer. With the white label, the Parusso 2019 Barolo Perarmando is dedicated to the man who founded this family-run estate in 1971. Armando's blend (with fruit from Bussia, Mosconi and Mariondino) shows some of the tighter or more astringent aromas that come from the stems and the skins of the Nebbiolo grape. You also get a lot of the pulpiness too with bold cherry and dried blackberry aromas. Those come on the heels of grilled herb and dark licorice. This is a production of 25,000 bottles annually."

This red exudes eucalyptus, pine, juniper and toasty oak flavors. The fruit component takes a back seat, yet this feels supple until the firm grip emerges on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 2,040 cases made, 500 cases imported.

A youthful saturated red/ruby color, the 2020 Barolo Bricco Boschis leaps from the glass with tangy aromas of sour cherries, orange peel, clove (it smells like heffeweisen), and dried earth. The palate is lovely, revealing a refined structure, ripe, velvety tannins, and a pure core of concentration with a ripe yet weightless feel. It has good depth and remains fresh, and its structure lasts long on the finish, but so does its fruit. I liked the palate more than the nose at this stage, and it’s likely going to improve with time in bottle over the next 12-15 years. Drink 2026-2040.

"The NV 40 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled with a bar top cork in 2014. It comes in with 125 grams per liter of residual sugar. Big, weighty and mouth filling, this is an aromatic Tawny that finishes with acidity and tension. Gripping on the finish, its flavors become more interesting as long as it sits in the glass (or on your palate). It is not, perhaps, as sunny as the Fonseca, its sibling reviewed this issue, but it is denser and more gripping. Comparing to the Taylor 30 (also reviewed), I'm not sure I liked the 40 here all that much better. The 30 is a bit fleshier while this 40 is a bit more concentrated in flavor and aromatics. Perhaps some additional age also helped this 40 combat some of the aggression on the 30. They are both pretty fine, a difference of five to Midnight and five after, rather than night and day. It is still a fine experience and my favorite of the group. Don't drink it too warm. Room temperature is mostly too warm. The sweet spot for most tends to be 58-62 degrees Fahrenheit."
