The 2021 Gigondas is terrific, with the textbook wild, feral vibe in its darker cherry, basil leaf, spring flowers, and sappy garrigue aromas and flavors. Despite its green herb edge, it’s not vegetal at all and has medium-bodied richness, a pure, vibrant, elegant mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and outstanding length. This is one of those wines that will grow on you over the course of an evening, and it's going to shine on the dinner table as well. Enjoy bottles over the coming decade. The blend is the usual 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah, 6% Cinsault, and the rest Mourvèdre, from 40- to 70-year-old-vines. One quarter was destemmed, it saw 18-21 days on skins, and was mostly aged in older oak foudre but a small part in demi-muids.

An earthy blend of blackberries, mint and cloves meets grounding notes of flowery underbrush and crushed rocks as the 2019 Aglianico del Vulture opens in the glass. This is youthfully backward upon entry yet deeply complex, with masses of dark red and black fruits braced by vibrant acidity. Hints of mocha and graphite slowly saturate. The 2019 is incredibly long and staining, with fine-grained tannins and a tinge of sour citrus and currants. A resonance of dark chocolate lingers on the finish. The potential here is remarkably high; the 2019 possesses a balance and complexity that will reward cellaring. This is a serious Aglianico del Vulture.

Roulot's 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Bouchères delivers aromas of pear peach green apple and orange oil mingled with toasted nuts white flowers and bread dough. Medium to full-bodied supple and satiny it's rich and layered with a gourmand charming profile and a long saline finish. Jean-Marc Roulot seemed happy with his 2022 portfolio a vintage that has the merits of combining high quality with normal quantity narrowly avoiding spring frosts thanks to dry windy weather. The order of the day here is crushing before pneumatic pressing with pressure increasing in small increments to deliver a large juice yield for comparatively little pressure. In the cellar as has been the case for several years Roulot is using less new oak adding ceramic vessels and foudres. Everything I tasted was as usual on the lees in stainless steel where the wines spend six months after their first year in barrel. The other news at this address even if it's outside the purview of this publication is that Roulot is producing a series of eaux de vie de Marc de Bourgogne from his different lieux-dits which makes for a fascinating comparative tasting just as it's fascinating to compare their vinous equivalents side by side. The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable.

A full-bodied, concentrated, awesome Pessac, the 2022 Château Pape Clément offers up loads of spiced red and black fruits, some leafy tobacco, gravelly earth, and graphite aromatics, building, ripe, polished tannins, and a stacked mid-palate. Beautifully done, with remarkable purity and a great finish, it's going to rank with the crème de la crème of the vintage and is well worth seeking out.

This is a very structured 2022 with powerful tannins that run the length of the wine. Yet it’s perfumed and fresh with flowers and subtle undertones of stone. Pure. It’s full but not heavy with backbone and structure. Lots of crushed stone and currants. One of the most transparent you Pape’s I have tasted. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet sauvignon.

95-97 Lisa Perrotti-Brown - The Wine Independent

The 2022 Pape Clement is composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon with a yield of 35 hl/ha. Deep garnet-purple in color, it is a little subdued to begin, soon unfurling to offer evocative notes of baked blackberries, boysenberry preserves, and plum pudding, followed by wafts of cassis, violets, cedar chest, and cumin seed. The full-bodied palate is rich and impactful, delivering layers of bright black cherries and baking spices with a lively backbone and fine-grained tannins, finishing long and energetic. pH 3.70.

The 2022 Pape Clément was picked 7-27 September at 35hL/ha, aged in 60% new oak. It has quite an open and expressive bouquet at this stage, with blackcurrant and bilberry scents. A more sensual Pape Clément perhaps, the oak is neatly integrated. Black olives emerge with time, hints of sea spray - this is certainly a wine you have to stay with. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Layers of black fruit laced with graphite and cedar, rending this 2022 quite Pauillac-like in style. Nicely controlled on the finish, this is a Pape Clément with breeding. Tasted four times.

Focussed and charming, good weight and depth, the tannins come into play almost straight away coating the mouth in fine but plump, fleshy black fruit with cool blue fruit touches and high acidity giving a different, lighter nuance. Well made, with good definition. Not as lively as some, but has supreme complexity and shine, everything feels well worked with touches of oak, liquorice spice and clove that dot the palate. Strong and serious but confident and controlled. A thoroughbred. Tightly knitted but still showing glamour. Harvest 7-27 September. Bee friendly, HVE3 certified. Celebrating 770 vintages in 2022. Deep and intense, but not the full on ink colour that I might have expected. Cocoa bean, fig, rosemary, kirsch, cigar box, black pepper, mint leaf, this ripples with the exuberance of the vintage but the tannins are firm, musuclar and hold things firmly in place, ensuring a sense of proportion. This walks the line, it is a big wine that absolutely delivers estate signature, and has a clear sense of future potential, with plenty of complexity. Rises to meet the vintage, not overpowered by it. Will age well.

Revealing aromas of blueberries, cassis, spring flowers and toasty new oak, the 2022 Pape Clément is full-bodied, broad and textural, with a rich, layered core of super-ripe fruit framed by liberally extracted tannins that assert themselves on the firm, lavishly oaky finish. This is a flamboyant, unabashedly modern-styled Pape Clément that will need several years in the cellar to blossom. It's a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Off to a good start with an intense aroma that is a mix of floral/violet and blackcurrant compote notes. The palate is more complex and very intense with a peacock's tail display of dark cherry, cassis, oriental spices and a whisper of nutty oak. A tangy undercurrent of ripe acidity helps drive a very lengthy finish revealing a wine with real power. Delicious now but will develop well with bottle age. Easy to appreciate.

Distant wood smoke, a flicker of nettle and lovely, tart blackberry fruit make for an aromatic nose. The palate comes in with exquisite freshness and a firm structure. Typically for Cornish Point, aromatic high jinks highlight the lovely juiciness. The finish comes with an echo of smoke and apple pip. Totally mouth-watering. This spent 13 months in 25% new French oak.
